Why Hiring a SEO Company Can Yield Better Results for Small Businesses

Small, medium or large, no business can afford to ignore the internet as a marketng medium these days. The internet has slowly morphed into our no.1 source of news, information and even social interaction. Facebook alone boasts a userbase above 800M and slowly inching to the magical 1B mark. More than 200M tweets are sent out everyday.

Ignore this massive marketing opportunity only at your own peril.

For many small businesses, learning internet marketing methods is like learning to ride a bicycle all over again. Many of the marketing tactics they've perfected over the years in their brick-and-mortar business fail to perform on the internet.

This is why even small businesses should look to hire a SEO company or agency to look after their online affairs.

The best SEO companies have morphed themselves over the years into complete marketing agencies that offer not just search engine optimization services, but also content creation, display advertising, and social media management. This is because the nature of the internet - and search engines in particular - itself has undergone a dramatic change. To rank well on search engines these days, you need a strategy that tackles multiple facets of marketing - an amazing blog, a well run Twitter account, and a well liked Facebook fan page. For the average small business, this can, and often is, too much to handle.

I'm not the kind of marketer who would blatantly advise small businesses already running in the red to spend even more money on "superflous" expenses like a SEO company. Five years back, I used to tell small businesses to just buy a good SEO book and practice for 2-3 months. Usually, that was more than enough to get their websites on track and up in the rankings.

Not anymore. The competition has increased to such an extent that ranking well requires a phenomenal amount of effort, especially for competitive keyword (and let's face it: only competitive keywords are actually worth ranking for). For a small business to compete in this field now on its own would mean ignoring the main business.

This is why I advise every small business looking to expand online to hire a good SEO company. And make sure that you get not just SEO services, but a complete online marketing strategy. This should cover every gamut of marketing online - SEO, social media, email marketing, and even group deals (Groupon, LivingSocial) if possible.

And don't skimp on paying for top-tier services either. Sub-par SEO companies will just take your money and idle around. You should look to hire the best that you can afford. Don't think of it as a waste, but as an investment in the future. The internet will continue playing an even more important role in people's lives. Investing in internet marketing is investing in future-proofing your business.

Great advice! The challenging part is finding the *right* kind of SEO company for the job.
